The Necessity of Women Leaders
It’s no secret that women run the world- at least, not to other women. Thankfully, research and changing times are slowly bringing this open secret to light.
Meta-analyses have shown that women leaders are superior to their male counterparts in a variety of leadership roles, such as:
providing emotional support to employees
checking in on the well-being of employees
helping their employees navigate work-life balance
preventing burnout
and more
More people also expressed a preference for a female boss, and believe women outperform men in leadership roles.
Challenges
It’s not all sunshine and rainbows, however. People have clearly not fully relinquished the long-ingrained biases and stereotypes about women. People have reported their beliefs that women are more likely to make decisions based on emotions, whereas men follow logical thought. A recent study also showed that women must be considered likable in order to get others to cooperate. Furthermore, people perceive women as the more trusted gender when they are in a crisis and need someone to take care of them.
Some of you may be wondering why it’s such a bad thing that women are trusted and women bosses should be likable. The problem arises in the differing standards for men and women. While bosses should be pleasant and likable, women who are less likable should not be receiving less cooperation than men. Furthermore, women should not be held to a different standard when it comes to helping and comforting others who are in a crisis. Supporting your co-workers and employees during times of crisis should be shared by all relevant parties, man or woman.
