Does Marriage Counseling Work?

Statistics on marriage counseling efficacy are rather mixed. While the American Association for Marriage and Family Therapy reported that a whopping 97% of clients say they got the help they desired, a 2010 study from the Gottman Institute found that 43% of couples who seek marriage counseling get a divorce.

There are a number of factors that can affect just how helpful marriage counseling is for you and your spouse. You and your spouse should both be open and willing to attend therapy and put yourselves out of your comfort zone. As people say time and time again, communication is key. Marriage counseling should be a time you can sit with a mediator and speak to your partner honestly and in a safe space.

Couples may decide to see a marriage counselor for a variety of different reasons. Some couples see one before they even get married, in order to hash out any existing problems before tying the knot. For some, marriage counselings is a preventative measure and a cathartic and guided appointment to address any problems before they turn into something bigger. Oftentimes, couples will decide to see a marriage counselor when they just can’t seem to resolve one major issue, whether it’s a financial, parenting, religious, or intimitate challenge the couple just can’t seem to find a compromise or proper agreement on.

So, should you see a marriage counselor? And will they save your marriage? While no one can say for certain whether therapy can save you from a divorce, it definitely can’t hurt. Only you and your partner are in control of how effective and meaningful your counseling experience will be for your marriage.
