How to Put an Outfit Together for Court

Even in the times of remote learning, work, and even courtroom hearings, it’s still important to make sure you have the proper attire for the courthouse! Although proper shoes may no longer be a requirement, it’s still important to maintain a certain level of professionalism during your zoom hearing. A good rule of thumb is to dress for your court appearance the same way you would dress for an important interview. Women are advised to wear a dress, pants (not jeans), or a knee-length skirt. Hats, flip flops, crop tops, baggy pants, or tank tops are not advisable to wear during a court appearance.

Although your appearance may be taking place from the comfort of your own home, try to make sure that it didn’t look like you just rolled out of bed! Combed hair, a white background (zoom virtual background are good to use if you don’t have a plain white wall to sit in front of!), and a fresh face can all help indicate to the judge that you are taking your court appearance seriously.

Don’t worry about trying to make a fashion statement when you go to court- in fact, the more conventional you appear, the better! One can never go wrong with a simple blouse and pants. On the other hand, if your work schedule does not allow for you to change your work clothes before a court appearance, the judge will be understanding of this as long as you make a note that your attire is due to your work schedule.

The most important thing to remember is to dress appropriately, take a deep breath, and feel confident that your attorney is fully prepared to represent you well.
